Surgery Day
I went through with it! I was really concerned about the day but in the end I think it was almost everything Dr. Jones and his staff promised it would be. It was a long day. I arrived just after 7:00 am and Dr. Jones and one of his staff members were already preparing for my procedure. I signed a release form and almost immediately I was lying on my stomach preparing for what I had been told was the toughest part of the day. A 1.6 cm strip of scalp was to be cut from the back of my head. No matter how you sugar coat it, that sounds nasty. The needles for freezing do sting but the process was over quickly. I could feel some tugging and pressure as my strip was removed and the stiches were inserted but there was no pain or discomfort. My only advice for anyone who is getting the surgery is to be sure you lift up the sterile sheets to be get some cool air into your breathing space as you lie face down.
After the strip was removed Dr. Jones trimmed what hair there was on top of my head and mapped out his plans for my head with a black sharpie. A short period of discomfort followed as my head was frozen for the implantation. As two staff members arrived to start seperating the hairs for implantation Dr Jones started to poke holes in my head to receive the follicles. No pain, just a strange feeling.
Dr. Jones turned the proceedure over to two of his attendants at that point. I watched 3 great movies as 3500 follicles were implanted. There was no real dicomfort during this process but as the freezing came out you needed to speak up so more could be injected. Again the famaliar sting during injection was my favourite part of the day.
My proceedure finished at about 6:00 pm and I was cleaned up and sent on my way with a very loose fitting hat and post op instructions.
I went home, fielded the calls from my family, friends and colleagues who knew what I was doing. I made a simple dinner for the kids and sat down in my favourite chair to watch t.v. No pain assoiciated with the surgery I just feel like I have a very tight ball cap on. I kept reaching up to remove my nonexistent hat.
I slept in my chair and had little or no trouble getting a good night's sleep
