Nov 2/06

Nov.2: I'm finally starting to see some hair growing! The shock loss hair is coming back so I'm starting to look better. I feel great other than a little itchiness where the stitches were. The numbness is gone. I can't wait for the hair to come in - it's getting exciting!

September 26 to October 17

Sep.26: After about 2 weeks all the scabs had come off and my head looks pretty much like it did before. The top of my head is still a bit numb but they say it is normal for that to last about a month. The stitches area is a little itchy but getting better. The only thing bugging me now is that after all that pain and effort I look the same as before! It takes 3-4 months before the hair starts growing in and 12 months before you see the full impact. In a way that is better since it is less noticable but there is no immediate gratification!

Oct.17: The numbness is decreasing but still there. Not much change in appearance although sometimes I feel like I have less than I did before. This is probably due to the shock loss. I've been using the minoxodil and just started the propecia to hopefully quicken the regrowth. Otherwise my life is totally back to normal. No one who didn't see me during the first two weeks would even suspect anything has been done.

Day 1 to day 5

Thursday Sept.7
I was nervous at the thought of being cut open and having all those needles poking into my head. The staff was pretty good at keeping me calm and made me feel as comfortable as possible. The procedure didn't hurt much other than the needles used to freeze the various areas. The day went by relatively quickly for me even though it was a full day. I watched a few movies, listened to my iPod and chatted with the staff. I'm not sure if it was the sedative, sitting around all day or the trauma to my head but I did feel quite woozy towards the end of the day. I had to ask my wife to come pick me up. I really don't think anyone should drive home after this kind of thing even if they feel fine. The painkillers I was eating kept the pain away but made me feel spacey so I don't think I could have gone to work either. Overall the experience was not fun but bearable.
That night I slept on a recliner to keep the 45 degree angle. Not too bad actually. I woke once in the middle of the night and took another dose of T3 to keep the pain away.

Friday
After soaking in the tub for 20 minutes my head looked a lot better. I guess most of the blood was washed away. I still felt uncomfortable enough that I think I would have found it very difficult to go to work. I was still taking the maximum dose of T3. I slept with a few pillows but on my bed. It wasn't too bad but my head was sore where the stitches were which made it uncomfortable.

Sunday Sept.10
I was able to reduce the dosage of T3 and that made me feel better. I would get an occasional headache but a regular Tylenol was enough. Luckily I didn't get too much swelling. Just a little around the eyes which made me want to keep them closed. I rested most of the day. Sleeping was better but my head was still sore in the stitches area. I was surprised that I still had that tightness sensation on my scalp.

Monday
My bathtub is small so I was finding it difficult to soak my head completely for 20 minutes. I switched to pouring mugs of water gently on my head. This is certainly easier but I hope it is as effective. I went to work with a hat so nobody really noticed. I think 4 days is reasonable before going back to work if you have a job that requires attention. I only took 2 tylenols today so I'm feeling much more alert. Maybe other people with a higher pain threshold can reach this level a few days earlier.
