These are the final "after photos".

These are the final "after photos". The transplant was a 2500 graft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and as you can see, the results look very full and natural. These photos were taken May 1, 2008.

4 Months

At four months, hairs are starting to sprout all over. Right now, the area that healed the quickest, the back, is filling in nicely. The front area, which took the longest to heal, is barely starting to sprout. I've also included a shot of the back of my head to show the results of the fin/,in regime. A full two inches down from where the crown hairline begins at the back is all new hair. Looks good!

4 weeks Post-op

Four weeks since the procedure, and the feeling has been gradually returning to the top of my head. Only the front part, the most densely packed, is still numb, but no longer with that "thick" feeling. The shockloss is at it's worst now, as you can see in the pictures. Just like last week, the left side (second day of harvesting) has lost the most, and in patches. I look like I have the mange! After the picture, I buzzed the sides to a 2 to even things out. Still looks bad. However, I have seen some hair spurts in those areas, so these patches should fill in over the next week or so. Other than that, I've been running and lifting like normal, and having the helmet on while playing doesn't bother me at all. Again, the new growth on the crown as a result of the fin/min mix is impressive. I can't wait to see the before and after comparison in another 4 1/2 months.

3 weeks Post-Op

It's been three weeks since the procedure. All crusts from the recipient site are long gone, although the frontal area remains somewhat pink all over, though not overtly so. You can see that all of the hairs have shed from the recipient site and shockloss is in f ull swing. In addition, I've noticed some shedding/shockloss in the donor areas as well, though more on the left side, interestingly enough (2nd day of procedure). There seems to be a number of the transplanted hairs that have remained, though, which is odd. The donor sites are still spotted, but gradually fading, slower than I expected. I think they're still noticeable, but my friends assure me they're not. Also, there has been definitive growth of full hairs both on the crown and at the hairline (wasn't expecting any growth up front) after only 5 weeks on fin/min. This growth is outside of the transplant areas. I've been taking a HUGE amount of ribbing from my friends, and poker night was an all-out dressing down of my soon-to-be head of hair. But since I'm usually the one enthusiastically dishing it out, it was very warranted so I bit my tongue. More next week.

Day 9 and 10 Post-Op

Day 9 Ran 5 K today, had a really good sweat and the crusts are really coming off now. Decided to soak and then follow with the shower, running soapy water over my head. I can now begin to see what the new hairline will really look like and it's really quite remarkable. It looks so natural! You can barely see the spots from the donor area now as they are fading and the hair is really growing in. I'd say the hair is about a 2 and more or less conceals every thing.
Day 10 Went out on errands today without a cap on and nobody noticed anything, so that's pretty cool. Soaked and then under the shower only two times today, and have had to start picking off crusts as they are getting caught in my original hair that is growing like weed, it seems. My original hair does grow quickly, and I think the spray on minoxidil has helped to alleviate shock loss. I'll report on that as the month goes on. The transplanted hairs are beginning to shed and fall out now, and it's so sad to see them go! I'll be reporting in weekly at this point.

Day 7 and 8 Post-Op

Day 7 Ran 5 K today and was caught in the rain, but it was a warm 12 degrees and the rain felt soooooo good on the top of my head. The good sweat seemed to have loosened up quite a few crusts on the top and my head just felt better in general. It seems that Dr. J may be on to something. Strong cardio and healthy eating will certainly promote quicker healing time in general, but it will be interesting to see if I also get early regrowth between 8-12 weeks (as per Dr. J's blog) . Head feels really good today, almost back to normal. Checked in with Natalie to see if I can let the shower run over my head (no rubbing), and seems to be okay with light pressure only. Have practice tonight so I plan on taking a lot of ribbing from the guys. But then again, they're free to make fun about me having hair anytime!
Day 8 Sweated a lot at practice last night, and the crusts really began to lift. To anyone about to go through the process, I suggest starting running soapy water over your head as soon as possible, which will help dry out the crusts and get them to lift. Today, I soaked my head three times, but decided to wait to go under the shower until tomorrow.

Day 5 and 6 Post-Op

Woke up today and the sides were a bit more sensitive than the day before. The days seem to alternate on the sensitivity, although it's still quite minimal. Soaked my head three times today, and there have been major crusts from the top coming off. Still have a lot of little crusts that have yet to come off. My original hair continues to grow well. Suspect that swelling, which I couldn't see or notice, is decreasing because ball cap was loose today while I was out.
Day 6 Soaked my head three times today, and while the sides are more or less fading quickly, the top crusts are quite stubborn. Head is returning to normal feeling, more or less. Numbness is subsiding considerably now, though I have yet to really touch the top. Didn't really feel like having a ball cap on today. Today was the last day of rest, plan a 5 k run tomorrow. Getting better with the new camera, shots are good today.

Day 3 and 4 Post-Op

Day 3 - Post Op Went out today on errands with a ball cap on. While the donor areas are still sensitive, can't say I noticed the cap was on. Felt good to have some outside air on it. Soaked three times today in warm water, each time progressively hotter. Put a little soap in the water too. By the third soak, the donor area is really cleaning up well. I'm running my hands over the donor sites now, feels good. No Tylenol's today. My regular hair is really starting to grow through the recipient site. Comparatively speaking, I can really notice the difference in thickness of the migrated hair.
Day 4 - Post Op Last night was the first time I was able to sleep on my side since the procedure, and that felt great. Woke up and the donor sites didn't feel pressured at all. I can run my hands over the donor site without any great sensitivity (though still numb), and I don't think much of them at all. I'm hoping the crusts on the recipient site begin to come off in greater number soon as I have to get back to work in three days. They seem to be sticking quite a bit more (as you can still see in the picture). Lost a graft today during the soak, though hopefully the root took and it was just the top half. Not being able to scrub my head in the shower is driving me crazy!

Day 2 Post-Op

Not much different than yesterday, though the donor sites are becoming less sensitive. I'm soaking my head three times a day. As you can see, the donor site crusts are fading quickly, but that the recipient crusts are a little more persistent. Donor site is still a bit sensitive. Took a few Tylenol's late in the day. I've also been using the spray on minoxidil (2%) after every soak to minimize shock loss. Bending over seems to rush a lot of blood to the scalp, which feels strange.

Day One - Post/Op

Slept a full 8 hours, very soundly. Started out at 45 degree angle, woke up slightly less! Still very little pain, but am taking Tylenol extra strength (not the 3s) for the numbness/sensitivity. The weird "numbskull" or "meat helmet" feeling is subsiding. The donor sites are sensitive, but not uncomfortably so. The right side, or the first day's harvesting, is much less sensitive than the left, and the crusts are fading quickly. The recipient site is largely pain free, though the most crusty. The pictures are as follows: the top (recipient site), the right side (first day), which can be compared to the left side (second day). You can see that the healing is quite quick. Went out with a ball cap on today and no one noticed anything. I can't stop checking out the new hairline out in the mirror!
