August 30/06
Five months have passed since the surgery. There is still numbness at the center front of my scalp. Incidentally, that is the area where the poorest growth is so far. Elsewhere, I can see tiny hairs sticking up if I look closely in the light. I can feel stubble on the scalp. I am still using Toppik, but as little as possible. People dont seem to be staring at the top of my head any longer, but the decrease in my own self-awareness may be contributing to that. Also, I had my hair blown dry straight to see how much my wide center part is closing in. It has closed in, but not enough to make my scalp disappear or to make me feel comfortable with straight hair. Thank Goodness my curly hair hides some sins."

July 30th Update
Here I am 4 months post-op. There is definitely growth, albeit the hairs are short. I can feel stubble, so there is more to come and from what I have read, the 5-month mark will be truly rewarding. My wide hair part is filling in, although still see-through and so I am still self-conscious about it. The decompression of stress and anxiety and the knowing that I dont have to worry incessantly about how my hair is going to look has been a nice change. There is still a bit of numbness in my center front scalp, but its not annoying any longer.

May 30th and June 30th update
"May 30th, 2006 Today is my two month anniversary. Remember that from your first love? No change really. Still a strip of numbness down the center of my scalp and the odd breakout. The anxiety is killing me. I really DO NOT like Toppik. It provides a tiny bit of comfort, however, it does not look natural and really makes a mess of the bathroom.
June 30th, 2006 So here I am at three months. There is still numbness on the top of my scalp. I can feel stubble on my scalp, and to be quite honest, I have to use less and less of Toppik to fill in a bit. Although slight, the increase in my hair is noticeable. My hair isn?t as flat on top and ?seems? like it has more volume. I guess that the stubble creates more body in my hair. By the four month mark, I imagine I will see some significant change, yet every week brings more improvement. This is very exciting and liberating at the same time."

day 12 to 8 weeks
 April 15th, 2006
Post-Op Days 12-16
Feel great – my chronic low-level anxiety (thanks to my hair problem) has become amazingly non-existent! Now when people “talk to my scalp” I just think “Yeah, wait until you see me in a few months!” I still have scabs on my scalp, but I’m not going to rush them. They will fall out when they fall out. I have been using pure Vitamin E oil on my donor area and it seems to be healing beautifully. Also, I have been consistent with Dr. Jones Scalp Treatment morning and night. I have been using Toppik to cover my problem area, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. It seems to sit on my scalp no matter how careful I am to shake it onto the hair and pat it down. The idea behind Toppik is that it’s supposed to cling to the hairs and fill in the gaps so the scalp is less visible and the hair seems fuller. I guess it’s better than not using any cover-up because my hair is very dark and my scalp is very white.

Post-Op Days 17- forward
From what I’ve been told and what I’ve read, I am almost half-way to the time when I will be able to see some new growth. That will definitely be a defining moment in my life. I have taken some pictures as of the 1 month mark. They are taken without the Toppik that I use before I go outside. I think I see noticeable shock loss, especially on one side of centre. One thing I can report is that I used Ojon hair treatment one night because my hair felt really dry and my scalp tight. For some reason, it really irritated my scalp so I’ll lay off the Ojon for a while. Otherwise I find it to be a great Canadian hair product line. May 13th, 2006 6 Weeks Post-Op
I can’t remember the last time I counted days like this. I have the weeks marked on my calendars. The excitement is overwhelming and yet I feel like I’m waiting for the baby to be born. What will the hair look like? Will I like it? Will everyone notice how great I look? Will I be able to style my hair beautifully? Will I stop being embarrassed at the hairdresser’s? Will I be out and about even more? Will I walk with my head high? You get the picture. The donor area is pretty feels almost completely healed when I run my palms over it, except for a couple of spots that still feel “pinchy” to the touch. The final area of numbness has just yesterday started to feel like the nerve endings are partially regrown. Great. When I run my hands through the transplant area, I can still feel quite a few hairs sticking up. No change to the look of my hair. I keep looking and looking and they don’t seem to be growing, but they are there. I’m having a little trouble with the Toppik cover up. At first it was very effective, but now it doesn’t seem to go on properly. In the morning it seems to do an okay job of covering up my thin area, and then through the day the Toppik turns into dots on my scalp. I don’t understand this and it can be very embarrassing. Will report again at around 8 Weeks Post-Op.
May 20th, 2006 7 Weeks Post-Op I can still feel grafts sticking up on my scalp. The only change to the look of my scalp is that I have developed a bit of an acne condition. I am told that this is a sign of growth.
May 28th, 2006 Here are some pictures from the 1 month mark. I wasn’t sure before, but I am now, that there has been shock loss. I see small areas where there has been up to 1.5” growth (front hairline and also near crown). The recipient area can still be very sensitive and there is still a patch of numbness, but it is smaller than my last report. Will report again after my 2-month checkup with Dr. Jones and staff.

Rose, Day 9
The area of numbness on my scalp has gotten smaller! Now, just bigger than the size of a toonie just behind the hairline. Great! I will start my exercise program again today (the break was nice though). I will take it easy on the treadmill and maybe do some weights with my new DVD. I plan talk to Dr. Jones on Monday about heavy duty exercising. Have taken photos, but it is hard to see the grafts or the scalp with my hair. I guess the biggest difference will be in a few months when I can show YOU that my wide part is actually getting thinner; a thin hair part is good, thin hair is not! I will keep a positive attitude and stay healthy. You may be interested in knowing that just having had the surgery, and knowing that those hairs are those waiting to sprout, has de-compressed my stress level already.

Wow! I has been one week since the surgery, now Im beautifully on my way to recovery. Today, for the first time, my donor area was painless. It is sensitive when I touch it, or mistakenly comb it (ouch!), but it was kinda cool feeling this good. Also, the numbing on the scalp is curiously disappearing. There is an area right in the center scalp just past the hairline, around the size of a fist, that is still very numb. I am hoping it will dissipate soon.

Rose, Day 7
It is kind of weird washing your hair not able to feel the scalp. I miss the feeling of massaging my scalp and wonder when I will have that back. I have washed my hair every other day for years now. When I had all my gorgeous thick hair I could go for 5 days; no oil or dandruff, just rich, luscious Mediterranean hair! The good old days. Anyhow.. back to reality now. Besides my scalp being numb, there are clearly some stubborn scabs around the hairline and they seem to require quite a few more days to fully heal. They almost feel like they were the deeper incisions, although I could be wrong. Those ones actually still hurt a bit. I DARE NOT play with the scabs. They will fall out when they fall out and not a moment sooner. When I gently run my hands through my scalp, I can feel the newly implanted hairs sticking up, and I’m told, most of those will fall out in 4 – 6 weeks or so. My hair looks different because I am combing it so gently that the style is just not the same. People have commented that I have let it go so curly, but the fact of the matter is I cant play with it until things are more healed. Will take a picture tomorrow, although it is tough to see anything because I had hair before the transplant. Oh, just so you all know, I had female hair pattern baldness and the scale was described to me as Ludwig 1-2 and by another doctor Ludwig 2 (opinions, opinions). Basically, I had a very wide center part and a see-through scalp.

Rose, Day 6
Today was the kind of day where I pretty much forgot about the surgery. There is still sensitivity in the donor area and my scalp feels tight and numb. Wow, it has been 5 days since my surgery after 20 years of looking for a solution. If there are any females reading this, and I hope there are, PLEASE do not live with the constant anxiety and stress of female hair loss; not to mention hiding away from the world. I got tired of people talking to my scalp (dates and interviews). No more shying away from the Sun (gardening, picnics, outdoor parties, beaches, vacations) and lighting (restaurants, elevators).

Rose, Day 5
Had a good sleep and feel good. My scalp looks like it has inkspots or some funky tattoo design. Seems to be healing beautifully. No real change, except the redness has almost disappeared. The soaking helped my hair look more like normal again. I will soak again today and start Dr. Jones scalp treatment tonight.

Rose, Day 4
My donor area feels a little sensitive and my scalp tight. There has been no bleeding at all. Drinking 4 litres of clear water daily. Had a wee bit of swelling in the forehead last night just below the hairline, a gel ice pack solved that one. Later in the day, I noted a forehead headache and a bit of nausea – perhaps the Tylenol 3?. Soaked my head in water and the scabs are healing nicely. Trough the night I was experiencing pain in the donor area.

Took one Tylenol 3 and had a good sleep. Woke up feeling pretty good. The scalp feels tight and the donor area a little tender. I am being diligent about taking my antibiotics and arnica homeopathic for any post-op swelling. Also drinking lots and lots of water to flush out the freezing, etc.
