Its no secret that our scalp can get dry, itchy, irritated, and even flaky. Sometimes these issues are caused by underlining health conditions or diet, while in some people the cause may be much simpler – a dry scalp. If you suffer from some of these problems what ways are there for you to condition your scalp?
Simple and All-Natural DIY Masks
The drug store is full of different hair masks that promise you different things – and granted, these self moisturizers have come rather far, but not all of us are comfortable with putting unknown ingredients on our bodies. Make your own simple, clean and natural hair masks that help to nourish your locks and ease a dry itchy scalp.
Coconut Oil Mask
We cook with it, use it as lip balm, drink it, and yes! Its even a valuable tool in maintaining a healthy scalp.
Step 1: Shampoo your hair to remove additional oils and build-up from your scalp and roots
Step 2: Lightly towel dry your hair, leaving it slightly damp (not dripping)
Step 3: Section by section, gently run coconut oil through your hair from scalp to tip. Massage it into your scalp for a couple of minutes to promote blood flow and absorption.
Step 4: Wrap hair in a towel (a warm one that’s been sunbathing or has just come right out of the dryer works best) and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse and wash.
*Pro Tip: using a towel in this recipe will prevent the oil from running down your forehead when it warms with your body temperature.
Raw Honey & Olive Oil Mask
Any professional hair stylist will tell you that when it comes to moisture, olive oil can be your best friend.
Add honey to this equation, which actually helps to pull moisture to the scalp, and you’ve got yourself an awesome hair mask!
Step 1: Mix 1/2 cup raw honey (most honey will work in this recipe) with 1/4 cup olive oil. You may need to slightly heat the mixture over low heat to whisk ingredients together really well. Use a double boiler to do this, if possible.
Step 2: Apply to hair and wrap hair in a plastic bag for 20-30 minutes. Rinse well and wash.
Banana Avocado Mask
Bananas contain potassium, which strengthens and repairs damaged hair. Avocados are moisturizing and nourishing, helping to beautify those dry ends, and hydrate your scalp.
Step 1: In a blender, add 1/2 an avocado and 1 very ripe banana.
Step 2: Blend together well.
Step 3: Apply to dry hair and massage into scalp
Step 4: Leave on for 15-20 minutes under shower cap or other plastic cover, and wrap in a towel. Rinse and wash as usual, then feel free to condition.
These DIY masks are great for providing your hair with extra moisture, but of course, they may not be for everybody. Be sure to consult with your doctor before beginning any new regiments and to be sure you have no allergies to the ingredients listed above.
